[News] MCPE birthday: 5 years old! And 1.0.0 trailer!

MCPE birthday cakeYep, 5 years ago today, Minecraft Pocket Edition was born. Okay, maybe not born, but it’s the day it was definitely released to the world! Happy MCPE birthday.

The first version of Minecraft PE was extremely basic. It had tiny worlds, no multiplayer, no survival mode, and hardly any blocks. The first version was developed entirely by the elusive Aron Nieminen.

“It wasn’t even supposed to have multiplayer at first, and the first internal version only had an ASCII renderer!” says Aron.

Nowadays, MCPE is the most popular version of Minecraft, with over 40 million players. That’s more than the population of Canada!

To mark this occasion, Mojang decided to release a new trailer for the upcoming ‘Ender Update’ AKA 1.0.0, which you can watch above. This new update includes a bunch of new features.

What’s new in 1.0?

  • Most notably, the End dimension, with Ender dragons, End cities, and Elytra wings
  • The world seed library, a directory of awesome seeds
  • Polar bears
  • In-game music, so you’ve always got something to listen to
  • 256 block high worlds, so towers can be twice as tall

Looking forward to the Ender Update? If you’re on Android, you can get it early by joining the beta program.
